You’ll also have the chance to shop for African fabrics and even get custom-made clothing by local tailors. A stop at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park follows, showcasing the life of Ghana’s founding father.
Lunch will feature local West African dishes, including Ghana’s famous Jollof Rice. In the afternoon, explore Jamestown and Usshertown, Accra’s oldest neighborhoods, where you’ll see colonial-era structures, the 30-meter lighthouse, and colorful fishing boats. Highlights include visits to Fort James, built by the British in 1673, and the Brazilian stone houses, built by formerly enslaved Africans who returned from Brazil.
The evening focuses on Jamestown’s boxing culture, visiting gyms or watching a boxing event if schedules align. Wrap up the day with dinner at a local bar and restaurant, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, music, and authentic community vibe. You can then relax at your hotel or dive further into Accra’s nightlife.
Overnight in Accra| Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Start your day with breakfast before heading to Accra's Cultural Centre, perfect for shopping for traditional clothes, crafts, and art. If you purchase fabric, your guides can arrange for it to be tailored into outfits before your departure. Next, visit West Hill Mall, a glimpse into modern Ghanaian shopping, to grab any essentials before the AfroFuture Festival.
After lunch, the day’s highlight awaits: the AfroFuture Festival (tickets not included, but your guides can assist with booking). Overnight in Accra | Meals: Breakfast
After breakfast, we visit the DuBois Centre, the former home and burial place of Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, an influential Pan-Africanist, writer, and anti-segregationist. Now a library and research hub, it offers insights into Pan-Africanism. Next, we head to TK Beads, where the Krobo people’s centuries-old bead-making tradition is showcased. Learn about the historical and cultural importance of beads in Ghana, watch skilled artisans at work, and even try making your own.
We then journey through the scenic Akuapem Hills, enjoying spectacular views of Accra and Tema, to visit the Aburi Botanical Gardens. Established in 1890, these gardens are home to diverse flora, including plants with medicinal uses. A short drive away is the Aburi Craft Village, where artisans create traditional African drums, sculptures, and crafts. This is a great spot for affordable, authentic souvenirs.
After lunch in Koforidua, the Eastern Region's capital, we continue to Kumasi, arriving in the evening. Relax at your hotel or explore Kumasi's nightlife.
Overnight in Kumasi | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
We start the day exploring the traditional Asante buildings, the last remnants of the great Asante Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These bamboo, timber, and mud structures feature symbolic Adinkra motifs, with active shrines still in use. We learn about Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the fearless Queen Mother of Ejisu Besease, who led the Ashanti in the 1901 war against the British.
Next, we visit Adanwomasie, the birthplace of Kente cloth. This village produces Ghana’s finest Kente, with intricate designs passed down through generations. Watch traditional looms in action and learn the history behind iconic patterns like the “Clinton Kente,” named after former U.S. President Bill Clinton. You’ll also have the chance to purchase authentic Kente cloth directly from the artisans.
At Ntunso, we discover the origins of Adinkra cloth, which predates Kente. Using carved calabash stamps and natural dyes, locals craft Adinkra designs that hold deep cultural meaning. You’ll even create your own Adinkra strip with personally significant symbols.
After lunch, we visit Manhyia Palace, home of the Asantehene (King of the Ashanti). The Palace Museum highlights Ashanti history and the legacy of their empire. Then, we tour the National Cultural Centre near Bantama, featuring a craft market and the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum, showcasing ancient Ashanti artifacts.
Finally, we explore Kejetia Market, the largest outdoor market in West Africa, where vibrant stalls offer souvenirs and a glimpse into daily life. In the evening, you can relax at your hotel or experience Kumasi’s nightlife with highlife music and live bands at local bars.
Overnight in Kumasi | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
After a relaxed breakfast, we journey southward to the historic town of Elmina in Ghana’s Central Region. Elmina, meaning "The Mine," was named by the Portuguese for its rich abundance of gold, which made Ghana historically known as the Gold Coast. Ghana remains one of the world’s largest gold exporters today.
Our first stop is Assin Manso, a significant location along the enslaved African trade route. Here, we visit the Ndonkor Nsuo (Slave River), where enslaved Africans were bathed and inspected for fitness before continuing their march to the coast. These individuals, often in shackles and having endured a grueling journey through the forests, rested here before heading to the Cape Coast or Elmina Castles, their final stop before being shipped to the Americas. In 1998, the remains of two enslaved Africans were symbolically returned and reburied here, a moving reminder of the importance of honoring their legacy.
After reflecting on this part of history, we continue to Cape Coast Castle, one of the most significant historical sites along the West African coast. Built by the Swedes in 1653 and later expanded by other colonial powers, this castle housed thousands of enslaved Africans in its dungeons under inhumane conditions. The “Door of No Return”, through which millions passed never to return, serves as a sobering reminder of the transatlantic slave trade. We will take time to explore the castle’s museum, shrine, and educational exhibits while reflecting on its history.
After a day of deep historical significance, we shift to lighter celebrations as we welcome New Year’s Eve in Ghana! Options for the evening include:
Celebrate New Year's Eve with a beachfront dinner or lively nightlife at local clubs and bars. Although tickets for the dinner aren’t included, we are happy to assist with bookings for a memorable night.
Overnight in Elmina | Meals: Breakfast and Lunch
We start the day early, enjoying breakfast on a beautiful beachfront before heading to Kakum National Park. This stunning rainforest is home to the iconic canopy walkway, with seven suspended bridges 40 meters above the forest floor. You’ll marvel at the breathtaking views and learn about the park’s unique wildlife at the information center.
After lunch, we head to a local village for a special traditional naming ceremony. Chiefs and elders welcome you with drumming, dancing, and libation pouring as you’re given your African name based on local customs—an emotional and memorable moment connecting you to your heritage.
To celebrate, we head to Brenu Akyenim for a private beach party. Relax on one of Ghana’s finest beaches, enjoy games like volleyball and soccer, and dance to music from a local DJ. You may also visit a nearby school built through our community efforts. End the day soaking in the vibrant atmosphere or exploring Cape Coast nightlife.
Overnight in Elmina | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
After breakfast, we begin our journey back to Accra. On the way, we stop in Elmina to visit St. George's Castle, the oldest colonial building in sub-Saharan Africa, dating back to 1482. The castle, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, has an emotional history tied to the transatlantic slave trade. Inside, an informative museum tells the story of the region's painful past.
Next, we visit the bustling local fishing market and traditional boat builders, where the centuries-old methods of crafting wooden boats are still in use.
Upon returning to Accra, we enjoy a final meal before transferring you to the airport for your departure, marking the end of a memorable trip.
